You need to find a good cleanser that your skin responds well to, and stick with it!
Avoid soaps or harsh facial washes as they tend to leave the skin feeling dry. Choose a creamy cleanser if you have dry skin or a clear cleanser if you have oily skin. Be careful not to cleanse too often, you only need to wash your face at night to remove makeup, which can clog pores and needs to be properly removed before you sleep.

To use a cleanser, simply apply it and then wipe it off, no water needed (if you have hard water, it can be especially harsh on skin), however most women prefer the water method: To do this use warm water to loosen dirt and clogged pores first (ensure the water is lukewarm as I find that washing with hot or cold water can cause broken capillaries). Then use a dime-sized bit of cleanser, and afterwards rinse again with lukewarm water. I personally swear by Pukka Ayurveda Gentle Cleanser. However do remember to remove eye makeup with a proper eye makeup remover as the area around the eye is especially delicate.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine, but if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference.

I use a facial scrub weekly to exfoliate my skin, but I also find using a washcloth when I cleanse my skin works just as well. I simply put a dab of cleanser on a damp washcloth and massage the cleanser into my skin in a circular motion. After a quick rinse, any sign of dead skin is erased. No need to use drastic methods such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids! I swear by Antipodes Reincarnation Pure Facial Exfoliator.

Should you use a toner?

Some people swear by toners, but many beauty experts do not. Toners are meant to remove all remaining traces of oil, makeup and dirt, but a good cleanser should do this anyway, and toners can leave your skin feeling stretched and tight. However, I choose to use an alcohol-free toner on my skin like Suti Rosewater Toner, which is gorgeous and leaves my skin feeling silky smooth.

Step 3: Moisturise

A basic rule of beauty is that if you have dry skin, you should invest in a basic moisturiser like A’kin 24 Hour Pure Moisturiser.
So how much should you moisturise? When your skin is tight, it’s crying out for moisture. Be careful not to over-moisturize – this can clog pores. Just a small amount on your fingertips or cotton wool will do the trick.

Are eye creams necessary?

Some beauty experts strongly recommend eye creams. Why? The skin around the eye contains no fatty tissue and is therefore very thin and susceptible to wrinkles. Special eye creams are formulated to properly treat this area and diminish the appearance of wrinkles, though your daily lotion or moisturizer should already help with this.

Step 4: Apply Sunscreen

Especially in the summer! The number one cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it’s essential you use your sunscreen properly and not just when you’re on holiday!
When I’m out and about I make sure to use Jason Sunbrellas Mineral Sunblock in SPF 30. It’s small enough to pop into your handbag while you’re on the go! I’d peronsally recommend Jason as they do a fantastic range of Sunbrella sunscreens for you, the kids and the rest of the family.
